YouTube image dimensions that work on every screen

Thumbnails that drive clicks

YouTube thumbnails are 1280×720 px with a 16:9 aspect ratio. They appear at various sizes — from full-width on the watch page to tiny in search results and sidebar suggestions. Design for legibility at small scales.

Keep thumbnails under 2 MB. Use high-contrast colors, faces with expressions, and minimal text (3-4 words max). The lower-right corner gets covered by the video duration timestamp, so avoid placing important elements there.

Channel art across devices

YouTube channel art is 2560×1440 px, but only a fraction shows depending on the device. The safe area (what always shows) is 1546×423 px in the center. TV shows the full 2560×1440. Desktop shows 2560×423. Mobile crops to 1546×423.

Place logos, taglines, and important visuals inside the 1546×423 px safe zone. Use the outer areas for background texture or decorative elements that can be trimmed without losing meaning.

Profile pictures and watermarks

Channel profile pictures are 800×800 px and display as a circle across YouTube. This icon appears next to every comment and video. Use a clear, recognizable image — a face for personal channels or a logo for brands.

Video watermarks (branding intros) are 150×150 px PNGs that sit in the lower-right corner of your videos. YouTube recommends keeping them simple and using transparency so they don't block video content.

YouTube image size questions

Practical answers about YouTube thumbnail, banner, and branding dimensions.

1280×720 px (16:9 ratio), under 2 MB. Accepted formats: JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP, WebP. Thumbnails display at various sizes, so use bold colors, large readable text, and high-contrast faces.

2560×1440 px recommended. The safe area that displays on all devices is 1546×423 px (centered). Desktop crops to 2560×423 px. TV shows the full 2560×1440. Mobile crops to 1546×423 px.

800×800 px recommended, displayed as a circle. Minimum is 98×98 px but that looks soft. JPG or PNG both work. This icon appears everywhere — comments, channel page, watch page.

150×150 px PNG with transparency. This optional branding element appears in the lower-right corner of all your videos. YouTube recommends a simple, one-color design that's visible but not distracting.

1080×1920 px (9:16 vertical). You can upload a custom thumbnail for Shorts from YouTube Studio. Unlike regular video thumbnails, Shorts thumbnails display in the vertical Shorts shelf.

Yes, but custom thumbnails require a verified YouTube account. Your account must be verified by phone to unlock custom thumbnail uploads. Thumbnails must follow YouTube's community guidelines.

YouTube crops the banner differently on each device. Design inside the 1546×423 px safe zone at the center of your 2560×1440 px canvas. Everything outside this zone may be hidden on desktop or mobile.

Yes, YouTube recompresses thumbnails and channel art. Upload at the recommended dimensions at high quality. Over-sized images get scaled down, and heavily compressed files degrade further.

JPG is best for photos — smaller file size under 2 MB. PNG is better for thumbnails with text, logos, or graphics with sharp edges. YouTube accepts JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP, and WebP.
